Barcelona Tapas is a hidden gem right off Carrollton Avenue. You can get there on the streetcar, which is a nice ride from downtown hotels, and it’s close to Oak, Maple, and Carrollton bars if you’re looking for a nightcap after dinner. This restaurant and the one just below are what made me start this list. The ViƱa Zaco Tempranillo wine is excellent and the lamb makes a great pairing but you really would have to try to go wrong here.
Jamilia’s Restaurant is a quiet, fairly nondescript spot on Maple St. with a Tunisian and Mediterranean menu. You can walk here from the streetcar and the owner is personally welcoming to every guest. When you’re here, you feel like family, if you happened to be related to an incredibly talented chef with flair for adding subtle flavoring to simple dishes and transforming them into something extraordinary. Outdoor seating is available and there’s bellydancing on Saturday night. The Atlantic salmon is killer.
